An Eventful Week (end) in Gracias

Another week in Honduras=another adventure. This past week at school went well. I finally felt like I was in the groove of teaching, as much as a first year teacher can be. But, then today started and I was lost at knowing what to do with my class. Wow, I cannot believe the ups and downs of teaching. Anyways, I will get to the pictures in my blog.
This past Saturday I went to an orphanage in Santa Rosa (1 hour away) with Kendall, Sarah, and Shannon and Kristi and family. We had a wonderful experience. Supposedly Mother Threasa was visited this orphange at one time in her life. We get there and the lady at the door told us to go visit the church near by were we would find the sister. And boy did we find the sisters. They were busy decorating the church (I do believe this was my first time ever seeing a nun). The ladies were so sweet and led us into the orphange. We walk through the front door and child after child comes running to us with their arms wide open ready to hug. All the children were so precious. This orphanage has children ages 6 months to 6 years and 38 children in all with 6 helpers. So, it is really important for people to come and even old the children because they need touch in their lives.

This video is of a young girl that I just got done feeding and she went into a nice food coma. It was  really funny to see her slowly fall asleep.

I was really impressed with how kept together this orphanage was. They had clean spaces for the kids to play and the children were kept up very well.

It was so cute watching all the little children getting fed. I guess this is one way to have all the children in one spot at one time.

When we came back and went to an Abundant life Christian School soccer game. It was the championship and they one 1-0. It was pretty exciting to have them win and to be apart of the competive match because soccer is BIG out here.

On Sunday morning there was a parade in town of all students dressed in trash. They were trying to teach people to recycle and to throw away their trash. Having trash here is a big issue because people are not educated to know what littering hurts the enviorment. So, it was really cool to see these schools marching for recycling!

This Sunday we went to a house church up the mountain, It never fails that we get stopped by some type of animal. It is always an adventur driving any where.
The picture on the right is of one of the grave stones in the cemetary. Kendall and I have been dying to go look at all the "houses" of the people that have died. (Wierd I know, but it amazes me that they actually build a house for the person that died). In a way it is a big sad because people dont understand that concept that once we die our bodiees are lifted up into heaven. We have no place here on this earth.

And to end my wonderful week and weekend I recieved an early birthday present, card, and care package from my family and my church. It always brightens up my day (week) when I recieve something in the mail So thankyou.

I hope all is going well in the states. Love and miss you all.

Copan Ruins

Another break, another trip. I just love traveling and seeing new and beautiful places. I am always amazed at all the trees that God has created and all the natural beauties I see looking out on my 6 hour bus trip. Kendall and I took off bright and early on Saturday morning for Santa Rosa where we were to meet the La Union girls. With our hands full and backbacks on we crammed all of or things onto the chicken bus.

We got to Santa Rosa a bit earlier than Erin, Gayle, and Heather, so Kendall and I grabbed ourselves a nice cup of hot green tea and did a little grocery shopping for the trip. When the girls finally arrived we got onto our next bus headed to La Entrada. Once again a packed bus with chickens and humans all crammed into their seats. It was a short trip, about an hour, through the beautiful Mountians. We made it to La Entrada and had to wait there for nearly an hour before the bus would leave because they needed more people on the bus. Well, in Honduras, they dont care how long you wait, just as long as the buss is packed to its max before departing. in a little 8-10 foot bench we squeezed at least 5 people plus the mothers with their babies into each row. I couldnt help but laugh at how we looked so crammed into a small spot. Boy, you really start to feel like family.

We finally arrived to Copan, being bombarted by so many children trying to get us to stay in "this" hotel. We had at planned we would stay at the "Blue Iguana" hostel. Known as one of the best and cleanest hostels in all of Honduras. We took all our baggages and trucked up and down streets to our hostel. And it was true, it was a very well kept hostel.

We then headed of to eat and to do some shopping in the stores. It was fun to look at all the honduran crafts and artwork. We just had a great time exploring the town.

The next day we took our time getting ready and headed out to Welches, a coffee place in Copan. It was a good breakfast with great smoothies. Afterwards we headed off for the Mayan ruins. On our way over we met a girl from Germany who was busy traveling by herself, so she ended up hanging out with us and taking pictures for us the rest of the day. I've added a few pictures of the ruins, so you can get an idea of what we got to see.

We were so close to Guatamala, but yet so far away.

 Myan Cemetary.

Some animal... this time I'm not sure what it is but it looked like a Taper, but I don't even know if they have them here :D But I thought it was cute!

Everything in Copan was absolutly beautiful, and I really enjoyed my trip. We made it back safely with minor problems. We are tired and exhausted after waking up at 4:00 am this morning but it was all worth the wonderful trip to see more of God's creation. Hope you all are doing well. Miss you all.

Hike, Hike, Hike, Celaque

Well, imagine that, I am writing to you twice this week, mainly to show you pictures of my absolutly gorgous hike up Celaque.I went with four other teachers of Abundant Life School.  Celaque National Park is just located beyond our school on the mountain. We left at 8:00 this morning to go on our adventure. We hiked an hour up towards our school and then continue the hike for another 45 minutes to get to the National Park. Little did we know it would take us so long to get up to the National Park, but we were determined.

The restroom at the park.

Our first bridge we crossed.

We got to the  park to begin our hike. The first part was not too bad, pretty simple, not a lot of hills. We continued on. The path got steeper and steeper. We got to our first resting point and one of the girls who was already feeling sick could not continue any longer.... So there as FOUR. We climbed more and more as it continued to get steeper. Another one of the girls was like I feel sick and feel like I cannot go any further... There was THREE. So, Tabitha, Kendall, and I continued to the top of the lookout wherre you can get a wonderful view of the large waterfall on the mountian. Celaque Mountain is known for having pumas in the forest...and I was ahead of the girls and a saw an animal that looked like a puma (or a monkey...something in the wild though :D ). Not many people believe me, but it is true.  He climbed down from the tree and hid in the underbush.

Anyways, we finally made it to the look out. It was a bit of a coudy day so the waterfall was not very clear, but it was absolutly beautiful.  The rain began to fall down on us in a light sprinkle. The God is good. I just cannot believe how beautiful GOd has made Honduras. There is so much to see and His beauty is never ending. On the way home, we got to the stopping point where we were to meet Jennifer and Raquel to find a nice message saying... Cold at visit center.
Not much further we see them walking under a nice umbrella together in the rain.
Exhausted and satisfied with what we saw we headed back down the mountain hoping and praying we could find ourselves a ride down the mountain. We were so thankful to see what we saw on Celaque Mountain. Our God is good! What a wonderful way to praise the Lord on a relaxing Sunday.

La Ceiba or bust...ed

Break in La Ceiba was absolutly a mixture of every emotion (fear, excitement, joy, happiness... and the list could go on). I'll do my best to offer the details to you.

Wednesday after school we took off on a chicken (beat up old school buss) bus to Santa Rosa. We stayed with a missionary family we had as a contact. They have lived in Santa Rosa for 2 years, and plan to stay for 10 years. It was a really great night eating pizza and sharing stories. Their house was beautiful and I fully felt like I was in the states for the night. We got little but comfortable sleep that night, waking up at 3:00am to catch the bus to San Pedro Sula, which was about a 4 hour bus ride. These longer bus rides had nicer buses, which was nice surprise! From San Pedro Sula we traveled to out destination La Ceiba.  We enjoyed the city with friends for the evening and stayed at a beautiful hotel.

The next morning we were picked up by Jeorge, who owns the company we were going rafting through. We spent the day with our guides Victor and Ismael swimming in the Jungle River, rafting (sometimes in the rain) and climbing boulders and cliff jumping. We had class 1, 2, and 4 rapids,   Kendall and I shared a raft with our raft guide Ismael, who spoke very little English, so it was a lot of fun getting to use our Spanish with him, and I do think I am slowly getting better! The day was absolutely amazing, and it was extremely beautiful and relaxing. On the way home George stopped and purchased some sweet corn for us to try. The sweet corn was grilled and then they put lime and salt on it. YUM! I definitely recommend making it!!

After our day on the river, we headed back to the hostel we were staying at for free that night (Jeorge owns this hostel as well, and since we rafted with his company we got free lodging). It was about 3:30pm when we arrived, and Kendall and I decided to walk 5 minutes down the road to the bank and to get some Wendy's.

On our way home we were greeted with some unexpected company. We got onto the loop our hostel was on (which is a very nice road with very nice houses), and were less than a minute away from it. I heard someone coming, and turned to see a man riding on a bike riding close to me. I thought in my head, "We both wonder why he is riding so close to us when he has the whole road."
Well, as he passed us he decided to smack Kendall's butt, and continue on. Soon, he turned his face around and gave a very creepy look towards us.  I asked kendall if he touched me, and as she was rather upset about that incident alone, Kendall said "that's not okay!" We had also just passed four women behind their locked house gate, but they were outside and could see this all happening. Well, the guy turned around and started riding towards us showing me the money sign with his hands.  We started to back up and shook our head no. At this point the guy is in the middle of Kendall and I, and he kept coming towards us and then proceeded to act like he had a gun in his pants and acted like he kept going to get it.  was saying "no, stop!" a lot and then as he continued to grab at kendall and her  little purse. So Kendall threw her purse. It ended up by me and I put my foot on it. The guy grabbed at the purse, broke kendall's keys off and threw them since they weren't what he was after, and continued trying to grab the purse. The ladies down the street were yelling for the man to stop, but not coming out to help. The guy stopped and took off. At this point Kendall isshaking and starting to cry and I told her not to worry because I had my pepper spray out now.
Well the guy immediately comes back and kendall runs to the ladies at the house behind the gate. I take the "rat" head on by spraying him in the face with pepper spray. I begin to run in the opposite direction towards our Hostel when Kendall yells at me to come towards the ladies. I change my direction getting pepperspray in my own eyes and on my skin (Not a good feeling.) We couldn't believe it all happened so close to where we were staying, and that it happened in broad daylight.
We got a ride from the ladies five houses down towards our host and reality fully hit, and we were really upset about what had just happened.  Jeorge's younger brother Nino, who was still at the hostel saw the end of what had happened and heard the guy got away, so he took off in his car to hunt the guy down. It ended up that Nino tracked down the guy (who was riding all over town trying to get lost) and hit him lightly with his car to make him fall off his bike. Nino brought him back to the hostel to make sure he got the right guy, and then the cops came. They made sure Kendall had her purse, and were very curious as to what we did to the guys eyes! We showed them the pepper spray, and they were very impressed. Who knows what, if anything, happened to the guy. We heard that he is a "little rat" and does things like that all the time, unfortunately. SO, my first mugging experience was very scary to me at the time, but there were a lot of blessings throughout the whole experience. I made myself find the good in the situation. There were people around to see, it was daylight, he didn't have a weapon, he didn't get any money, I had pepper spray, and we are both safe again. Maybe he even learned a lesson, because that pepper spray in his eyes did not feel good! It was scary, but God was definitely with us and had His angels guarding us as well.

That didn't stop the fun break we had planned. The next morning we got picked up at 7am to go to the islands to go snorkeling and hiking. We took a 35 minute boat ride out to Cayos Cochinos, which is a group of about 15 small islands including one major and minor island. The minor island was where Survivor was once filmed on, and we saw some of the old game towers from the show on the island from our boat. Grandma, I know you will enjoy that little fun fact! We went snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea in the Meso American Barrier Reef, which is the second largest coral reef in the world. It was so beautiful! We swam with beautiful schools of fish and I even saw a sea horse! Sadly I didn't see a turtle or anything else. But I don't need pictures to remember the beauty of the sea! We then went hiking on one of the islands to look for the Pink Boa, which is almost extinct. We saw 4 of them on our hike! They looked more brownish, but when our guide picked one up, it slowly started to turn slightly pink. Our guide explained that this snake has no other predators, as no other animals can eat the snake, so it dies only from old age. After our hike we went to another island where we had a lovely fish lunch made for us, and we enjoyed swimming some more.
Our boat ride home was really fun. We had to leave the island by 2pm because soon after the weather changes and the water gets really rough. We could tell we were headed straight for rain! Water cyclones were forming all around us, which was so neat to see! About 10 minutes left into our ride the hard rain began to fall. The waves quickly got bigger, and I felt like I was getting hit nonstop by paint balls. Kendall and I were sitting in the second row on the boat and were getting drenched. So, naturally, we decided to put on our snorkeling masks so we could at least see! It was HILARIOUS. We had on our old school orange life vests, and snorkeling goggles on the boat. I kept laughing out loud when I would look at her, and knew that I looked just as ridiculous! Good times. It was a good end to our adventures in La Ceiba.

We woke up at 5am the next morning to start our journey back to Gracias. The last bus ride had music and music videos playing, with a lot of Bob Marley. One of his great songs came on, and I simply sang along with a smile on my face.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed my blog this time around. A short update about school....It is still a huge challenge in my classroom not being able to have the kids understand there is a time to talk and a time to be quiet. I am hoping and praying that things will get better each and every day.
Hope all is well love and miss you all.

Who invented KID'S DAY?

Wow, after a hot day at school a nice rain to cool us off is always refreshing. I love the evenings when it the rain comes pouring down and the streets are flooded. This week of teaching has gone much better, but there are still many classroom management issues to work on. I hope and pray the days will soon run smoothly where teaching can happen. I really enjoy my students and like getting to know them better and better everyday.  Today is a busy day in Honduras. All the children of Honduras are celebrating kids day. Therefore, the kids can do whatever they want. So, today at school the kids did not have to wear their uniforms (the one day out of the whole school year). The kids did not have to do any school work. And the kids could eat cake, candy, and junk food all day. Now, why don't they have a day like this for teachers too. So, last night, my assistant Mrs. Delmy went out to the grocery stores to get candy and cake for all the students. We enjoyed spending time shopping together and communicate together as best as possible (often time getting confused because my Spanish is not good). But, we did our best and got the good for the students.

Here is my class. We always line up in boy and girls lines before going anywhere. We try our best to stay in a straight line with our hands to ourselves...but it does not always happen :). We are working on it!

Here are some of my students. For kid's day the highschooler put on skits the students to kick of kid's day.

This is Candido he is one of my students who loves to gives hugs and was dying to take a picture with me.

Luis, Erick, and Rene are also in my class. The two boys on the left are sons of the other teachers in the school.

Today, we were required to stay after school for an extra two hours after most of the students left. So, we decided to spend those two hours running off our cake playing soccer verse some of the students who stayed at school.

Well, not too much more has been happening here. The water has been going out about every night for an hour or two, so it is hit or miss if you can brush your teeth and wash your face.

Oh, the lady in the red in the picture above is a teacher in Kinder-5. Her and her husband are missionaries in Gracias. They have kindly have all of us teachers over every Wednesday to eat some good home-cooked Honduran food (made by their 'maid') and then sit down and have Bible study together after we eat. We plan on going through the book of Philippians throughout the school year.

I hope all is well in the states and I miss you all.
